IP Change Policy — How It Works + Fair Use

Updated June 5, 202648 views

Your TSL license is tied to your server's IP address. You can move the license to a new IP whenever you need to — there is no fee, no yearly cap, no quota top-ups. This guide explains exactly how that works and where the boundaries are.

How IP change works

  1. Log in to your TSL dashboard at https://theserverlicense.com.
  2. Open the license you want to move → click Change IP.
  3. Enter the new IP address → confirm.

That is everything. The new IP becomes active immediately on our side. Within a few minutes your control panel (cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, etc.) will pick up the new status on its next validation check and resume working on the new server. The old IP stops being valid instantly — nobody else can keep using it.

Tip: if your control panel on the new server still shows "License suspended" more than 5 minutes after the change, run the refresh command shown on your license page — this forces an immediate re-check.

What "unlimited" really means

One license = one server at a time. The license can move between servers as often as you need — no limit on how many times you change the IP over the lifetime of the license.

This is a real benefit. Competitors typically charge $1.49 – $2.00 per IP change. On TSL, moving your license is free forever.

You can use this for:

  • Migrating your hosting provider
  • Upgrading to a larger server at the same provider
  • Moving between datacenters
  • Replacing a failing server
  • Testing a new setup before cutover (change once to test, change back, then change to production)

Fair use — what is not allowed

Although IP changes are unlimited, one license cannot power multiple servers at the same time. The following patterns are treated as license abuse:

  • Rapid rotation between unrelated IPs — for example, pointing the license at server A for a few hours, then server B, then server C, and back again, so that multiple servers take turns using the same license.
  • Using one license to serve clients on multiple concurrent dedicated servers — sharing a paid license across a customer base.
  • Giving another account access to your license's IP so they can "borrow" it. Our system detects parallel usage.
  • Reselling the license to a third party without going through us.

If our system detects one of these patterns, your license is temporarily held for review. Your service is not terminated — it is paused until we can confirm whether the activity is legitimate.

What to do if a legitimate change is blocked

Genuine use cases can look similar to abuse from the outside (for example, a same-day migration where you have to test, rollback, and re-deploy). If you get a "Change IP unavailable" error:

  1. Open a support ticket at https://theserverlicense.com/tickets.
  2. Tell us:
    • The license ID or current IP
    • The new IP you need
    • Short reason (server migration, provider change, failover test, etc.)
  3. Support reviews and processes the change manually — usually within a few hours, often faster during business hours.

There is no penalty for legitimate use. We only hold the pattern long enough to confirm it is not concurrent multi-server use.

What happens if you abuse the policy

Two-stage response:

  1. Temporary hold — license gets an automatic review flag. Support investigates. If the pattern is clearly concurrent multi-server use across unrelated networks, we explain the policy and unblock on the condition that it does not continue.
  2. Permanent termination — if the pattern continues after a warning, the license is terminated without refund. Our upstream vendor also independently detects multi-server use and can revoke licenses that we cannot recover.

We would much rather you buy extra licenses than get caught abusing one. Individual licenses are inexpensive; multi-server hosting on a single license is not sustainable for you or for us.

If you need one license on multiple servers

That is not a loophole — that is a legitimate business need, and we sell it as multiple licenses. Order one per server from your dashboard. Each license gives you its own independent unlimited IP changes on its own server. Bulk pricing and wallet-credit bonuses apply.

Summary

ScenarioAllowed?
Change your license's IP for any reason✅ Yes, unlimited
Migrate to a new hosting provider✅ Yes
Change IP when your datacenter reassigns✅ Yes
Test on a second IP during migration, then rollback✅ Yes (just explain if blocked)
Use one license to cover two servers at the same time❌ Not allowed
Swap IPs repeatedly to share one license across clients❌ Not allowed
Resell the license to a third party❌ Not allowed

If you are unsure whether your use case is covered, open a ticket first. A 5-minute support conversation is faster and cheaper than a terminated license.

"Unlimited" IP changes are subject to the fair-use terms above.
